Smudging 101: How to Sage Your Home, Office, or Living Space

Burning sage (aka, “smudging”) to cleanse people, places, and energy is a practice that has been around for over 4,000 years. Many ancient cultures – and modern ones – burn sage to promote clarity, wisdom, and healing. And using sage in your home or office is the perfect ritual to reset your space or make a new home feel more like yours.

Think of it this way – we work out and eat well to take care of our bodies. Think of smudging as part of your spiritual hygiene and one way you take care of your spiritual energy.

Let’s dive into all things smudging, and why you should use sage in your home.

What does burning sage in a home, office, or living space do?

Burning sage in your home or office is used to help diffuse negative energy in the high-traffic areas where energy likes to gather. Smudging will help promote positive energy and healing, as well as reset the space.

So whenever you have a party or stressful meeting, or the energy in the room feels crowded or negative, burning sage will help clear that out – freeing it up for more positive feelings and energy.

What are the physical benefits of smudging a home or space?

Smoke from burning sage disinfects the air by killing bacteria. Plus, sage smoke releases negative ions which have been linked to putting people in good moods. So you get to clean your air and feel good after burning sage!

How do I sage my home?

1. Gather high-quality sage

Don’t just go to Amazon and buy whatever smudging kit you can find. It’s important to use ethically sourced and cultivated sage. Because the intention in the cultivation is just as important as your intention for the ceremony.

If you want sage you can burn multiple times, you’ll love our SAGE candle. It’s made with environmentally friendly and ethically sourced ingredients, comes in a zero-waste glass container, and is hand-poured to maintain integrity. With a 70-hour long-lasting, clean burn, you’ll be able to sage your living spaces many times!

2. Prepare your mind & the room

When you sage your home, it’s important to have a positive mindset and clear intentions. One way to do this is to clean the room you plan to smudge. Don’t feel you need to rush this process. Take your time to set the space to whatever feels “right” so you can focus on having a calm mind for the saging ritual. If you need to, meditate after cleaning to calm your body and mind.

3. Open the windows & doors

All that negative energy needs somewhere to go. By making sure you open up the windows and doors in the space you’re saging, the energy has a pathway to exit the room. Otherwise, the negative energy gets trapped, canceling out the positive effects of the smudging ceremony.

4. Light with care

If using a sage bundle to burn, make sure you have a container to use to catch any ash as you move around the room and to place the bundle after you’re done.

If you’re using our SAGE candle for your ceremony, you won’t need to worry about catching any ash! But it’s a good idea to read our candle care tips to get the most out of your candle, along with a few safety tips.

5. Move around the room

As you move around the room with your sage, pay special attention to the corners, the front of mirrors, and anywhere the energy feels crowded. As you do, say a mantra, affirmation, or prayer to make the saging more powerful. It also doesn’t hurt to ask out loud for the negative energy to leave – this helps further set your intention both verbally and in your mind’s eye.

And now your room has been reset – ready for you to enjoy and further build positive intentions and affirmations!
